A masterlist of video games that have influenced me the most; branded on my memories.

I also just really enjoy them and I think they're the most fun and fantastic works of art out there!

Style Savvy

2008-2017

genre(s):

Fashion, Shop Sim, Life Sim

This is possibly the greatest series of video games to ever exist. Due to its gorgeous original box art being butchered in overseas versions, you may have passed this game up entirely.
In these games, you run your own boutique and assist quirky customers and your friends in picking out outfits for them and matching clothing to their requests. Everyone is so charming in this game - it's like stepping into a world where femininity and being your true self is always celebrated. It is just, the perfect happy and chill vibe to escape into.
There is a huge amount of clothing options to play around with as well (I'm talking like, in the tens of thousands). So, rest assured, you'll be able to create outfits that suit your tastes - even if your style is more niche. This is a Japanese game from the 2000s and 2010s after all, so there's literally like, gyaru, visual kei and lolita styling galore in these games.
You can also do everyone's makeup, hair, and nails. And participate in fashion shows and idol concerts. And you can dress up masculine people too, if you're into that.
Sounds incredible, right? So, what are you waiting for? Go play this game and have the time of your life!!!

Project Diva

2009-2020

genre(s):

Rhythm

Released just two years after Hatsune Miku's release in 2007, the Project Diva series of games stars the "main six" vocaloids from crypton future media. Fanmade loids Teto, Neru, Haku, and Sakine Meiko are also playable!
In this rhythm game, the goal is just to press the right buttons at exactly the right time in accordance with the large list of vocaloid songs available to play.
This series holds a special place in my heart, as it really is a beautiful amalgamation of all of the efforts of the vocaloid community - there are a ton of fan references in the games, as well as fanmade designs rendered into official 3D modules, tons of fan art displayed proudly on each loading screen, and gorgeous 3D music videos that capture the stories the producers want to tell. Many entries in the series also featured an edit mode that allowed players to create and share their own 3D music videos and charts to whatever song they wanted.
Here is a really insightful and COOL nekoweb website all about the first game in the series.
You may have noticed that I also have a page on my site all about my own dippings into the modding community, if that piques your interest.

Nancy Drew (PC)

1998-2024

genre(s):

Mystery, Puzzle, Point & Click

HEAR ME OUT BRO-- these are some OLD ASS games that are actually pretty engaging puzzle/mystery adventures!! And the voice acting and graphics are technically "outdated," but I wouldn't call them ass by any means. They're actually really expressive and fun imo. And there is like 34 of these babies!
The box art I've chosen to show off is from my favorite in the series - The Legend of the Crystal Skull. It's a gothic mystery set in a spooky house in New Orleans. The house is filled with all kinds of campy silly spooky things like glass eyeballs and igaunas in the vents. And, if you must ask, yes I'm a Henry Bolet stan.

Persona 4 Golden

2012

genre(s):

Mystery, JRPG

This is a game about accidentally falling into televisions, beating up weirdo shadow monsters, solving a murder mystery, and confronting your true self! This game...is literally life-changing. Truly the video game ever. It's very comforting for me. I played it when I was about the same age as the main characters, so they really all felt like they became my close friends. It's really engaging and super fun to dive head first into this weird world and try to catch a creepy serial killer with all of your friends, scooby-doo style. This game goes for like $20 on steam these days (and often goes on sale), and I really think it's well worth the money! Also, it has some of the most groovy, unique soundtracks of any game I've ever played.

Danganronpa

2010-2017

genre(s):

Mystery, Visual Novel, Horror

Weird girl required viewing. Squid game before it was cool. Music hits so good, character deaths hurt so bad.

A bunch of super talented students are rounded up, locked inside of a school, and forced to kill each other and get away with it if they want to have any chance of getting out. Pretty fucked up game, but my 13-year-old life wouldn't have been the same without it. I love the entire series btw!
